Benghazi reconstruction projects prioritised – Al Marsad

Libya – Officials in Benghazi met today to set priorities in the city’s reconstruction plans. The chairman of the municipality’s administrative council, Sagr Omran Bujwari, reviewed the project portfolio with the head of the Eastern Province Urban Development Agency and other officials.

The portfolio contains a mass of reconstruction projects – infrastructure, roads, schools and other educational facilities, hospitals and health clinics and security centres, as well as the provision of water supplies and sewerage. These are be implemented jointly by the of Benghazi municipality and the Urban Development Authority in the Eastern Region.

The meeting follows the decision on Wednesday by the head of the interim government, Abdullah Al-Thinni, to allocate LD 620 million towards Benghazi’s reconstruction. Altogether some 53 reconstruction projects in the city were approved, including major rehabilitation works at Jelaa hospital and the construction of three new schools as well as completing a number of housing units. Additionally, it approved upgrading the municipal council officise at a cost of LD12 million and the laying of new water pipelines from the Gar Younes reservoir.

Although the fighting to free the city from militants caused considerable damage, much of the city’s basic infrastructure had been left to rot during the Qaddafi period.
