Interim government calls on China to appoint special envoy – Al Marsad

Libya, 31 March 2019– The foreign minister of the Benghazi-based interim government, Abdelhady Alhweij, has called on China to appoint a special envoy to Libya as well as take an active role in the UN Security Council in finding a solution to the Libyan crisis.

The call was made during talks in Tunis on Sunday between Alhweij and the Chinese ambassador Wang Qimin. Alhweij was in the Tunisian capital for meetings with various Arab and other international figures on the sidelines of the Arab Summit.

In the talks, which covered the latest developments in the Libyan crisis, Alhwij also asked that Chinese construction companies return to Libya. He especially called for them to restart work in projects in Benghazi, Soloug, Marj and the south.

The minister also proposed a Libyan-Chinese Partnership Forum which would allow for strategic political and economic partnerships but also cover cultural and scientific cooperation such as Libyans learning Chinese and Chinese learning Arabic.

According to the interim foreign ministry, the ambassador welcomed the proposals, expressing China’s interest in finding a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Libyan crisis.
