Video: Initial confession of GNA mercenary pilot – Al Marsad

Libya, 7 May 2019 – The foreign pilot captured today by LNA forces after his plane was shot down in the Hira area near Gharyan says he is Portuguese, aged 29, and is named Jimmy Reece.

In a video recording of his interrogation, he said that he was employed on a “civil contract” but that his job was to destroy roads and bridges.

Several roads in areas around Tarhouna, Gharyan, Esbaia, Sidi Sayeh and Suq Al-Khamis have been subjected to heavy bombing in recent days.

Asked who had employed him he said it was someone called Al-Hadi but claimed that he did not know the rest of the man’s name.

He is reported to have been flying out of Misrata air base.

Despite his claim to be Portuguese, it is possible that the downed mercenary had been based in the US. “Jimmy Reece” is not a Portuguese name. It is more American or British.  Moreover, in the video, he speaks with an American accent.

Portuguese media say that the Portuguese government has been informed and is trying to find out exactly who Reece is, the date he left the country and any other details. Sources say, however, that so far, they cannot trace any “Jimmy Reece” or names like it among former air force pilots or other pilots.

If a seemingly credible account by an American pilot is true, this would not be the first time since the revolution that a foreign pilot has been contracted for combat flights based out of Misrata.
