Visit by Minister Highlights Economic Recovery Efforts in Derna – Al Marsad

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Interim Government, Mr. Abdulhadi Al-Hweij toured the city of Derna during the last two days to assess the condition of the city after its liberation from the control of terrorists and extremist groups.

[Libya, 1 June 2019] – According to the Ministry’s Media Bureau, Al-Hweij described Derna as “the city of tolerance” where different religions coexisted, citing the fact that the Catholic Church, the Synagogue and the Old Mosque were only separated from each other by a few meters.

Touring the Old Mosque, the Catholic Church, and the Synagogue, Minister Abdulhadi Al-Hweij pointed out that Derna has a notable history of resisting extremist ideologies.

The Minister also toured the Mosque of the Companions of the Prophet where 73 venerable Companions are buried. He also visited other tourist attractions in Derna, known as the City of Culture.

Expressing gratitude to the Libyan National Army (LNA), Al-Hweij praised the soldiers and officers of the armed forces for liberating Derna from the grip of al-Qaeda and ISIS, stressing the importance of the normalization of the daily lives of the residents. Al-Hweij stated that the Interim Government has already embarked on key efforts to rehabilitate and revive the city’s economy.

Al-Hweij urged the international community as well as local, regional and international organizations and NGOs, to report the truth and refrain from disseminating news that did not reflect the actual situation in the city of Derna after its liberation, and to highlight the marked improvements witnessed by the city in terms of security and economic activity.
