UNSMIL’s Stephanie Williams Meets with Senior LNA Commanders During Visit to Benghazi – Al Marsad

Stephanie Williamsthe Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs in Libya of UNSMIL met with Major General Abdul Razzaq al-Nadhuri, the Chief of Staff in the Libyan National Army (LNA) and senior commanders. During her visit to Benghazi, Williams also met with key security and civic leaders and pledged UNSMIL’s support for the people of the city.

[Libya, 10 July 2019] – The Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs in Libya of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie T. Williamsmet yesterday with Chief of Staff in the Libyan National Army (LNA), Major General Abdul Razzaq al-Nadhuri. The meeting, held at the Headquarters of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, was also attended by Ms. Williams’ accompanying delegation including Salim Ra’ad, UNSMIL security affairs in-charge, and Samia Ishaq, human rights officer at UNSMIL, in addition to a number of UN personnel.

Major General Faraj Al-Sowsaa, the Military Prosecutor General of the LNA, Major General Khairi al-Tamimi, Director of the Office of the General Commander of the LNA, and Brigadier General Mourad al-Saber, Director of the Office of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, also attended the meeting with the United Nations senior official.

The Libyan and UN sides discussed ways enhancing the role of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and mutual cooperation mechanisms in the field of security, combating terrorism, prison conditions and prisoners of war, as well as working on the principle of safeguarding human rights.

Major General Abdul Razzaq al-Nadhuri said that the LNA has achieved major victories against terrorist groups that contributed to the significant improvement of the overall situation on the ground.

“Human rights are rigidly observed as a safeguarded principle. We preserve and enhance these rights and ensure them within the priorities of the work of both the security and military establishments, and will be enhanced further with the completion of the justice system and the activation of civilian and military judiciary,” Major General Abdul Razzaq al-Nadhuri stressed during the meeting with the UN senior official.

The Chief of Staff also emphasized that the LNA is accelerating its efforts to eradicate all nodes of terrorism in order to stabilize and secure the homeland and preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as establish law and order in every part of the country.

Meeting Security and Civic Leaders in Benghazi

During her visit to Benghazi the Deputy SRSG for Political Affairs Stephanie Williams visited also the Women’s Police Center at the Benghazi Security Directorate where she “hailed the role of women police officers in the work of the security sector, describing the establishment of the department as vital & sought details on its needs.”

Williams also met with Tawerghan activists living in Ajdabiya and Benghazi and discussed the challenges faced by IDPs, in particular women and children “in the areas of health and education, as well as employment creation.” She also met with President of the General Federation of Libyan Trade Unions, Nermeen al-Sharif where they “discussed the status of trade unions and the importance of a national constitution that guarantees and protects workers’ rights,” according to UNSMIL’s official twitter page.

The Deputy SRSG for Political Affairs Stephanie Williams also met with Mayor of Benghazi, Al-Saqr Boujwari, and municipal council members, to discuss with city officials the challenges they are facing in providing essential services to residents. Williams asserted the UN’s commitment to support the people in Benghazi.
