Islamist Mufti Gharyani Supports Attack on Bani Walid Civilian Airport – Al Marsad

Sadiq al-Gharyani, the Islamist “Grand Mufti” of the defunct General National Congress (GNC) praised Resolution No. 9 issued by Usama Juwaili threatening to target Bani Walid Civilian Airport for alleged military use by the Libyan National Army (LNA).

[Libya, 11 July 2019] – Sadiq al-Gharyani, who was hosted by the “Islam and Life” television program broadcast weekly by the Islamist Tanasuh satellite channel said that the decision by the so called Commander of the Joint Operations Room of the Western Military Zone, General Usama Juwaili came at the right time because the “enemy”, as he put it, was using a civilian airport for military purposes.

Gharyani called the “leaders and officials” to show vigilance and prevent any attempt by the “enemy” from strengthening what he described “the criminals of Tarhouna” and their aligned groups. The HoR-impeached former Grand Mufti urged the Government of National Accord (GNA) and its allied forces to close down the Bani Walid Civilian Airport. He described the GNA and its aligned Islamist militia forces as the “front of righteousness.”

The Islamist cleric, Sadiq al-Gharyani, who is still barred from entering the UK given his consistent track record of hate and extremist speech, recently returned to Tripoli after an extended stay in Istanbul, from where he regularly issued his provocative sermons and statements.

On June 2017, following the Gulf diplomatic crisis with Qatar, a number of nations including Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Maldives, Mauritania, Senegal, Comoros, Chad, Somali-land, and Libya’s HoR Parliament, designated Sadiq al-Gharyani as having links to Qatari-backed terrorist sponsorship and terrorist-related activities such as inciting violence and hate in Libya.

Gharyani Attacks Aref Nayed’s Letter to UNSMIL

Sadiq al-Gharyani also criticized the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Libya Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS), Dr. Aref Ali Nayed, for the letter issued by the Libya Institute for Advances Studies (LIAS) to Ghassan Salamé, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya (UNSMIL). Dr. Aref Ali Nayed stressed to Salamé that the Bani Walid Airport was a civilian airport under the protection of the Montreal Convention and its annexes, and used solely for the supply of humanitarian aid, as well as the necessary foodstuff and medicine that were cut off to vital areas due to the systematic and deliberate siege of several Libyan cities by the GNA militias.

Gharyani said that the statement issued by LIAS Chairman, Dr. Aref Ali Nayed, should not be tolerated and that it was full of fabrications because Dr. Nayed referred to summary executions committed by GNA forces against soldiers and officers of the Libyan National Army in the wake of the GNA takeover of the city of Gharyan, in addition to denying access to ambulances and closing main roads and highways to provide emergency medical relief.

In his typical habit of instrumentalising religious texts and mixing it with Islamist political rhetoric, Gharyani referred to Dr. Nayed, Gharyani when a saying of the Prophet Muhammad: “The Messenger of God (may the peace and blessings of God be upon him ) said, “Truth leads to piety and piety leads to Paradise. A man persists in speaking the truth till he is recorded with God as a truthful man. Falsehood leads to transgression and transgression leads to the Hellfire. A man continues to speak falsehood till he is recorded with God as a great liar.”

“Nayed is shedding tears as if the GNA is summarily executing the wounded, or as if those at Bani Walid airport are civilians. They turn a blind eye to Haftar’s bombardment. These are propaganda machines hired by Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia,” said Gharyani in the Islamist Al-Tanasuh television channel.

Social Council of the Wirfalla Tribes of Bani Walid

However, the Social Council of the Wirfalla Tribes of Bani Walid, through a statement read by its spokesperson Aguila al-Jamal, praised the letter issued by the Chairman of LIAS, Dr Nayed, to UNSMIL. Aguila al-Jamal stated categorically that the Bani Walid Civilian Airport would remain open.

He also confirmed that the Bani Walid airport is only used for civilian purposes. The spokesperson of the Social Council of the Wirfalla Tribes of Bani Walid said that any attack by Juwaili on the airport would not go without a response from the Wirfalla.
