Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Issues Statement on Murzuq – Al Marsad

“The actions of the Government of National Accord and its use of armed groups from outside Libya are acts that threaten the social fabric in the city of Murzuq,” the Libyan House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee said, urging the UN Mission headed by Ghassan Salamé to take urgent action.

[Libya, 25 August 2019] – The Committee confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday that the full responsibility for the recent escalation in the city of Murzuq lies with the Tripoli Government of National Accord (GNA), a government imposed by the international community on the Libyan people, and its armed groups, according to the statement.

The Libyan House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee revealed that such actions are a sign of the explosion of the situation in the South in general, which will have long-term repercussions, and will affect neighboring countries as well. These acts also pose a threat to the unity and sovereignty of Libya and an opportunity for armed groups and outlaws from inside and outside Libya to carry out their criminal plans and squander the capabilities of the Libyan state.

The Committee pointed out through its statement that the Libyan National Army (LNA) is an institution for all Libyans and performs its duties in maintaining the security of the country and preserving its resources and capabilities.

The Committee called on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the UN Security Council to take an urgent and firm stance on what is happening in the city of Murzuq and to shoulder their responsibilities towards protecting the wealth of the Libyan people. The Committee stressed its continued efforts to cooperate with neighboring countries, particularly the southern belt, in order to secure and restore stability to the entire region and its inhabitants.

The Committee concluded its statement, affirming its support for reconciliation between all regions and tribes of the south of Libya, and recognizing the importance of accelerating the development of the region and the collection of weapons from it, and calls on the elders and sages of the tribes of the South, without exception, to urgently renounce differences and observe the national interest, and stand united against external agendas that threaten the stability and unity of the country.
