Abu Bakr Baira: Turkey Supports the GNA to Establish a Foothold in Libya – Al Marsad

Libyan parliamentarian, Abu Bakr Baira, said that Turkish support for the forces of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) is part of Turkey’s agenda to establish a foothold in Libya by exploiting the ongoing war in the North African oil-rich country.

[Libya, 1 September 2019] – “Turkey considers Libya a country rich in opportunities for its companies despite Ankara’s government problems with the European Union, the situation in Syria, its deteriorating relationship with the Turkish people, and its dispute with the United States,” Baira said during a telephone interaction with 218NEWS Satellite TV Channel.

The Libyan parliamentarian pointed out that Turkey is trying to utilize the crisis in Libya to serve its own agenda, noting that Ankara sent, on several occasions, weapon  shipments to Libya, beginning with the cargo ship that was seized by the Greek Customs authorities, and the other shipment that was impounded at the Western Libya’s seaport of al-Khoums.

He pointed out that some people justify the shipment of arms from Turkey because it is for the benefit of the troops aligned with the Tripoli-seated Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA). They say that the Skhirat Libyan Political Agreement did not enter into force, and that both the Presidential Council and the Libyan House of Representatives are at odds. Baira pointed out that this issue is the responsibility of many political parties, including the former UN missions (of Bernardino Leon and Martin Kobler) and the United Nations.

The member of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) was surprised by the lack of response from the UN Security Council, which is watching Turkey sending weapons to a country under UN embargo as if they are enjoying the ongoing shedding of blood on the Libyan soil.
