Al-Abani: Berlin Conference on Libya Must Support the LNA – Al Marsad

In an interview with the Egyptian newspaper Al-Dustour, Mohammed al-Abani, member of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), demanded that the forthcoming Berlin Conference on Libya, aimed at resolving the Libyan crisis under the auspices of the United Nations, address and mend UN Security Council Libya-relevant resolutions. He also called for the reform of the agreements facilitated and sponsored by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), particularly during the tenure of the former two special representatives of the UN Secretary General to Libya, the Spanish diplomat Bernardino León, and the German envoy Martin Kobler.

[Libya, 4 November 2019] – HoR Member Mohammed al-Abani pointed out that UN Security Council resolutions contributed to the weakening of both the infrastructure of the army as well as national legitimacy. According to Al-Abani, the UN Security Council resolutions could have consolidated the Constitutional Declaration issued on 3 August 2011 instead of producing the controversial Skhirat Libyan Political Agreement in 2015, which he described as “corrupt”, and imposed it on the Libyan people. In the view of Al-Abani, this pushed the country into a dark tunnel of corruption through recycling and reproducing the remnants of the defunct General National Congress and resurfacing them to the forefront of the Libyan political landscape.

Al-Abani, said to Al-Dustour that the Libyan people, who are supporting the Libyan National Army (LNA), can no longer bear the injustice of the international community. He stressed that the Berlin Conference on Libya should support the LNA in its war against terrorism, lift the long-imposed arms embargo, and consider that the Libyan National Army (LNA) is fighting the battle against terrorism on behalf of all nations, in order to cleanse the entire national territory of Libya from the evils of terrorism and prevent them from spreading elsewhere.
