Norland: US Ready to Support Political Dialogue in Libya – Al Marsad

The US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, held a meeting in London on Sunday with the Chairman of the Presidential Council of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, according to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Libya. The meeting discussed efforts to end the conflict in Tripoli which is now in seventh month.

[Libya, 4 November 2019] – According to the US Embassy in Tripoli, the US Ambassador stressed his country’s support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Libya “amid mounting involvement of external government agencies and mercenaries in the Libyan conflict, and the high number of civilian casualties.”

Ambassador Norland reiterated United States’ opposition to the escalation, and affirmed US commitment to work with Libyan and international partners under the guidance of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Ghassan Salamé, to break “this destructive cycle of attack and counter-attack with foreign empowerment that has claimed the lives of many innocent Libyans.

The conflict, as the statement put it, has underscored the dire need for all responsible Libyan parties to work through the political process to restore security in Western Libya, and encourage economic reforms crucial to ensuring a more prosperous future for all Libyans.

In conclusion, the statement of the US embassy said that “at the request of Libya, the US Embassy is ready to lend its full support to the Libyan political dialogue,” stressing that the ongoing conflict is undermining the joint US-Libyan fighting against terrorism, and compromising prospects of economic recovery in Libya.
