Grimaldi Hopes Berlin Conference on Libya Will Achieve Consensus – Al Marsad

Chairman of the Presidential Council of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, received today in Tripoli, the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Maria Buccino Grimaldi. The Italian Ambassador said he hope that the Berlin Conference on the Libya crisis would result in a consensus among regional and international countries for a lasting solution to the present conflict.

[Libya, 6 November 2019] – According to the GNA Media Bureau, the meeting reviewed the latest developments in Libya, and the repercussions of what Fayez Sarraj described as “the aggression targeting Tripoli”, in reference to the Libyan National Army (LNA) advance towards the capital, and the bilateral relations between Italy and Libya.

Ambassador Grimaldi reiterated his country’s rejection of what the GNA Media Bureau categorized as “the aggression on Tripoli that poses a threat to the lives of the civilians.”

The Italian Ambassador expressed hope that the Berlin Conference on the Libya crisis would result in a consensus among regional and international countries on a solution that will end the ongoing situation and restore stability to the country.

In an interview given to Independent Arabia yesterday by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and which was published in full in English by Al Marsad, commander of the LNA forces said he personally supports any international or national sincere efforts to seriously address the Libyan issue, and if this conference will convene, he wishes it will culminate with success. Haftar said: “By success, we mean the results of the conference must address the long suffering of the Libyan people. We do not yet know what is the agenda of this conference, and I am convinced that addressing the Libyan situation begins with the elimination of terrorism and the dismantling and disarmament of militias.”

The meeting between Sarraj and Grimaldi also discussed a number of joint cooperation files between the two countries, including the issue of illegal immigration. The Italian Ambassador lauded the effectiveness of joint coordination in the face of this phenomenon as well as in combating human trafficking.

The Italian diplomat praised the efforts of the Libyan Coast Guard in rescuing illegal migrants in the high sea, and confronting human traffickers.

For his part, the Chairman of the Tripoli-seated Presidential Council hailed the support provided by Italy to the Libyan Coast Guard.

However, there seems to have been no discussion or statement on the continued presence of the notorious smuggler and human trafficker, Abd al-Rahman al-Milad (or Al-Bija), and his official position within the GNA-affiliated Coast Guard.
