Fratoianni: Italy Cannot Ignore the Migrants Detention Centres in Libya – Al Marsad

Nicola Fratoianni, member of the Chamber of Deputies and Secretary of the Italian Left, criticized the inability of the Rome government to keep on working according to the provisions of the signed Memorandum of Understanding on Combating Illegal Immigration between the State of Libya and and the Republic of Italy.

[Libya, 10 November 2019] –  “At this level of suspension of the MOU (between Italy and Libya) proposed by the (Italian) government, it shows that it is completely incapable. We continue to be victimized by the Salvinist statements [referring to the right wing former Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Northern League, Matteo Salvini] which completely focus on reducing immigration flows and ignore what is happening on the ground in Libya,” Nicola Fratoianni told a local radio station quoted by AKI news agency.

“To be worthy of its name, Europe cannot continue to live with this reality,” Nicola Fratoianni said, referring to the drastic conditions at the migrants detention centres in Libya.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said that Italy would not halt its 2017 Memorandum of Understanding, a deal with Libya that was signed in to reduce migration. But the government pledged that it will work to improve the deal, “with special attention to migrant centers and conditions.” The deal was automatically renewed for another three years on 2nd November to huge criticism by human rights organisations.
