Mahmoud Abdel Aziz Al-Werfalli: Qatar and Turkey Must Be at Berlin Conference – Al Marsad

Member of the defunct General National Congress since 2012, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz Al-Werfalli, and senior leader in the Muslim Brotherhood, claimed that there are prisoners of war belonging to the Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement, as well as from the Janjaweed, who are held by armed groups affiliated with the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA). Al-Werfalli asks why the GNA has not benefited from this information and utilized it in defense of its stance.

[Libya, 12 November 2019] – In a TV programme aired by Islamist Al-Tanasuh Satellite Channel, which was monitored by Al Marsad’s editorial team, Mahmoud Al-Werfalli stated that all the information is documented but not used in any serious way, especially in the light of the failure of the Government of National Accord’s diplomacy to fulfil its duties and convert the issue into a public opinion focus point around the world. The interview was a window into the internal discords within the pro-GNA in Libya.

“Where was the vice-Chairman of the Presidential Council (of Tripoli), Ahmed Maitiq, last week? What did he do in the Sudan? It was catastrophic for Ahmed Maitiq to visit Khartoum and meet the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, and the Sudanese Foreign Minister without holding an (official) press conference. This means that the visit of Maitiq to the Sudan was not arranged according to the diplomatic protocols. On the other hand, we did not hear of a single statement issued by the Presidential Council saying that any outputs reached by the Berlin Conference on Libya will be of no concern to us unless Tunisia and Algeria, as our neighbors, and Turkey and Qatar, as our supporters, participate in the conference. Unfortunately, the Chairman of the Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, had issued a resolution on 24 October assigning a Libyan official delegation, headed by the Director of the International Cooperation Department, and another team, to visit the Russian Federation. The question is: who is going to grant them entry visas?” he wondered.

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz Al-Werfalli pointed out that the group is a technical delegation tasked with arranging a visit to Moscow for the Chairman of the Tripoli-based Presidential Council to meet with various sectors. However, the ineffective handling of these matters by the Presidential Council made the the Russians not interested in the visit.

At the end of the program, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz Al-Werfalli called on the Presidential Council of the Tripoli-based GNA to deal seriously with the current situation because the ongoing conflict is a battle between two different projects, as he put it. The Muslim Brotherhood’s senior member also called on the Presidential Council to refrain from conducting his policies haphazardly.
