Italian Interior Minister Calls for Closure of Migrant Detention Centres in Libya – Al Marsad

Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese renewed a call on Sunday for the need to close migrant detention centers in Libya. “The 2017 Memorandum of Understanding with Libya on illegal immigration and human trafficking needs to be changed. Humanitarian corridors must be accelerated, and the currently operating migrant detention centres need to be gradually closed to make way for structures managed directly by the United Nations.” according to Agenzia Nova.

[Libya, 25 November 2019] – Lamorgese, who took up her role in September after the formation of the new coalition government in Rome between the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) also said, “The Malta agreement is still working and there has been a step forward from France and Germany demanding the submission of a joint request on the distribution of migrants. This signals that the trend towards addressing the issue is changing, and is European.”

Lamorgese highlighted that last September, the arrival of migrants from Tunisia increased due to the political situation and growing instability, and that in November this year the average number of arrivals was 693  compared to 980 in November 2018.

Minister Luciana Lamorgese said that there are currently two ships of non-governmental organizations with migrants on board seeking safe haven in Italy.
