GNA Foreign Minister: MOU with Turkey Protects the National Interest and Serves Brothers – Al Marsad

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Mohamed Siala, conducted today several phone calls with his counterparts in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, defending his government’s position on the signing of two MOUs with the Republic of Turkey on maritime borders and security cooperation between the two countries.

[Libya, 4 December 2019] – According to the pro-Islamist Libya Al-Ahrar Satellite Channel, Mohamed Siala told the foreign ministers of the three Maghreb states that “the Memorandum of Understanding with Turkey safeguards national interest and primarily serves brothers and is not an infringement on the sovereignty of any country.”

It should be recalled that a delegation from the Government of National Accord signed last Wednesday with the Turkish government in Ankara two MOUs, one on security cooperation between the two countries, and the second on the maritime boundaries’ demarcation and jurisdiction areas.

At the same time, the GNA Foreign Minister warned of the danger of “some countries trying to undermine the legitimacy of the Government of National Accord, which is internationally recognized in accordance with the Security Council resolutions.”

The Libya Al-Ahrar channel announced, citing an unnamed source, that some major Arab countries are currently exerting efforts in the Arab League, the African Union and the Organization of the Islamic Conference to withdraw their recognition of the Government of National Accord, which emanated from the controversial Libyan Political Agreement, but has never been sworn in before, or ratified by, the Libyan House of Representatives.

It is noteworthy that Chancellor Aguila Saleh asked yesterday the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to withdraw the recognition of their organizations of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord.
