Aguila Saleh and Ghassan Salamé Meet in Cairo to Discuss Libya Crisis – Al Marsad

Chancellor Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HOR), met yesterday in Cairo with Ghassan Salamé, UN Secretary General’s Special  Representative to Libya. The Speaker of the Libyan Parliament informed Salamé that the Skhirat Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) is practically now obsolete given that its governing principles, terms and provisions have never been implemented since the LPA came to existence in December 2015. Chancellor Saleh elucidated that the continuation of this unfulfilled agreement for a long period, in contravention to its provisions, has negatively impacted the lives of Libyans.

[Libya, 17 December 2019] – The Media Adviser to the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Abdul Hamid al-Safi Afkiren, confirmed in a statement to Al Marsad that the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament expressed his surprise at the intransigence of the international community in keeping Siddik al-Kabir in the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) governorship despite the fact that the CBL governor has been deposed by the Libyan House of Representatives (HOR) before the conclusion of the Libyan Political Agreement. Afkiren categorized the meeting as extraordinary and very important.

The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HOR), Chancellor Aguila Saleh met yesterday in Cairo with Ghassan Salamé, UN Secretary General’s Special  Representative to Libya.

Chancellor Aguila Saleh also inquired about the United Nations official stance visa-à-vis the recent threats by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to deploy Turkish troops in Libya in a flagrant military intervention. The Speaker of the Libyan Parliament requested that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) take swift measures to depose Fayez al-Sarraj and the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) and to put in place a mechanism to equally distribute Libya’s wealth among Libyans, listen to their opinions and respect their will in the forthcoming Berlin Conference.

Afkiren revealed that the UNSMIL Head stressed that the proposal of the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives with regard to the formation of a Government of National Unity will lead, according to his confirmation, to an agreement between the Libyans for which the Berlin Conference on Libya will set an international umbrella that will support and follow up on such initiative and its implementation in accordance with the Constitutional Declaration, which is the existing Libyan constitution. It should be recalled that Chancellor Saleh had indicated in a speech yesterday the need to form a Government of National Unity as a way out of the ongoing Libyan conflict.

For his part, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives demanded that the Berlin Conference avoids any selection of a particular political personality to rule over the country in the next stage, otherwise the scenario that happened at the Moroccan city of Skhirat will be repeated in the German capital. Chancellor Aguila Saleh stressed that the free will of the Libyan people must be respected, according to the Media Adviser to the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives.
