US Secretary of State Discusses Situation in Libya with German Foreign Minister – Al Marsad

According to the Press Office of the U.S. State Department, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo conducted a telephone call on Friday with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

[Libya, 21 December 2019] – Mike Pompeo discussed with his German counterpart the situation in Libya and the Nord Stream 2 Russian gas pipeline as the main topics in their telephone exchange.

State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said, “Secretary Pompeo and Foreign Minister Maas discussed ongoing international efforts in support of the UN Secretary-General Special Representative to Libya, Ghassan Salamé, to achieve a ceasefire in Libya and a return to the political track.”

In addition to the situation in Libya, the two sides also talked about “U.S.-German coordination on a range of global challenges,” Ortagus added in a press release.

“Secretary Pompeo and Foreign Minister Maas also discussed the United States’ strong opposition to the continued construction of Nord Stream 2,” the State Department Spokesperson continued.

Although the U.S. Senate voted Tuesday to impose sanctions on companies working on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Moscow vowed to press ahead Saturday with the project.
