Erdogan: Turkish Support for GNA will Ensure Implementation of MOUs with Tripoli – Al Marsad

In his New Year’s address to the Turkish nation, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “The project to exclude Turkey from the Mediterranean has been foiled with the latest steps we have taken,” in reference to the memorandum of understanding concluded on 27 November between the Turkish government and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), on the demarcation of maritime borders and defining economic jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean.

[Libya, 31 December 2019] –  “With support to the legitimate Tripoli government, Turkey will ensure implementation of all elements of agreements with Libya,” the Turkish President stated referring to both the maritime MOU and the security and military cooperation pact signed with the GNA.

Erdogan claimed that “the schemes to exclude Turkey from the Mediterranean has been foiled with the latest steps we have taken,” according to the Anadolu news agency

Both Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party and opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) announced earlier that both parties will back a motion to deploy Turkish troops in Libya that was submitted to the presidency of the Turkish Parliament, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Other Turkish opposition parties led by the Republican People’s Party (CHP) are expected to vote against the draft bill. However, both the AK and the MHP members of the Turkish Parliament are expected to tilt the voting in favour of passing the motion at the Turkish Assembly next Thursday.
