Turkish Energy Minister: We Embark on Drilling Licensing in the EEZ Demarcated in the Turkey-GNA Pact – Al Marsad

Fatih Dönmez, the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, said that the licensing procedures for seismic operations in the maritime jurisdiction areas defined in accordance with the agreement recently signed with the Government of National Accord (GNA), will begin in the coming months.

[Libya, 01 January 2020] – According to Anadolu news agency, Dönmez statements came during his visit to a gas storage facility in Istanbul. During his field visit to the gas installations, Dönmez communicated with the crew of the Yavuz and Fatih drillships in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Turkish Energy Minister reiterated his government’s resolve to safeguard what he claimed as Turkey’s inherent rights and the rights of the Turkish Cypriots in the potential and proven massive reserves of gas.

Dönmez told reporters last month a few days after the signing of the maritime pact with Tripoli on 27 November, “we will continue our efforts to achieve regional peace by distributing the riches of Cyprus island and Eastern Mediterranean in a fair manner. Our extensive and long-term exploration and drilling activities in the region will resume as planned without making concessions to our legitimate rights on licensed blocs.”

The Turkish energy exploration measures provoked Nicosia which reciprocated by issuing arrest warrants early December for crew members of the Turkish-flagged drillship, Fatih, and managers of companies cooperating with the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO).
