Al-Azhar’s Council of Senior Scholars Rejects Turkish Military Intervention in Libya – Al Marsad

Al-Azhar University’s Council of Senior Scholars held an emergency meeting today, Saturday, headed by the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, to discuss the recent events in Libya.

[Libya, 4 January 2020] – The Council, according to its official website, confirmed that any external interference on Libyan soil is a “corruption that would further complicate the situation in Libya, spill more blood and kill innocent lives.”

In its statement, the Al-Azhar Council of Senior Scholars also dismissed the principle of guardianship asserted by some regional countries as a justification for breaching the sovereignty of other countries, rejecting the mentality of hegemony adopted by some regional countries against the Arab world.

The Council called on the entire world, Islamic countries, and international institutions concerned with maintaining international peace and security to prevent this interference before it occurs and reject settling disputes through the power of wars that could lead the region and the world towards an all-out war.

They called on all Libyan brothers to heed the voice of wisdom to avoid the destruction of Libya’s future and the tearing of the brotherly bonds among its people which could lead to fragmentation, according to the statement.

Al-Azhar’s Council of Senior Scholars reiterated its support for Egypt’s stance that always calls for the highest degrees of diplomacy in resolving disputes, stressing that this position is not new to Egypt, which was and still is a strong barrier against tampering with the security and safety of the Arab and Muslim peoples, expressing its hope for a peaceful settlement of the Libyan conflict.
