German Foreign Minister Warns of Libya Turning to Another Syria – Al Marsad

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas yesterday called for an effective truce in Libya and a speedy start to a political process, warning of Libya’s transformation into a second Syria. Maas had announced that “the EU would attempt a new mediation in view of the escalating violence in Libya.”

[Libya, 9 January 2020] – German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas’s comments came after the Chairman of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al- Sarraj, met with EU Council President Charles Michel and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell who also warned that the country was facing a watershed moment because of the protracted Libyan conflict.

Heiko Maas explained that the situation in Libya, especially around the capital, Tripoli, has become more difficult, stressing that Germany intends to help prevent Libya from becoming a theatre of a proxy war.

The German Foreign Minister added that Sarraj expressed, during their talks, his support for the Berlin process, especially the proposed ceasefire and an arms embargo as well as the reactivation of political process under the leadership of the United Nations

The EU pledged to step up efforts towards achieving a peaceful and political solution hoping the forthcoming Berlin Conference on Libya, under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL), can offer a way out of the Libyan crisis.
