Vice-President of Forza Italia: Italy is Excluded and Europe Has No Weight in Libya – Al Marsad

The Vice-President of Forza Italia and Chairman of the Constitutional Affairs Commission of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, stated today, Tuesday,  that Europe no longer has any weight in Libya, while Italy is excluded.

[Libya, 14 January 2020] – In statements to Radio Anch’io, Tuesday, disseminated by the Italian news agency, AKI, the Chairman of the Constitutional Affairs Commission of the European Parliament said, “We are waiting for the Berlin Conference on Libya next Sunday; Europe is unfortunately divided and has no weight in Libya whatsoever, and Italy is completely out of the picture vis-à-vis the German initiative.”

Tajani said that the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and the Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio “only travel, while the state of no agreement between France and Italy on Libya allowed Turkey and Russia to become dominant forces in the North African country.”

He considered the elimination of Gaddafi in 2011 as a big mistake that led to the destabilization of Libya.

The Vice-President of Forza Italia concluded, “the role that the Libyan tribes can play will be quite important in the next stage, as they represent the third axis and can play a major role in achieving stability in the region.”

In another context, The European official indicated that Italy should achieve self-sufficiency in energy and there is a possibility to extend the Israeli EastMed pipeline to Italy via Cyprus and Greece, considering that the issue of energy is a major challenge.
