The European Union warned Turkey against any unauthorized gas drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially in the Cypriot waters, before the start of the international conference in Berlin to bring peace to Libya.

[Libya, 19 January 2020] – The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, called on all member states of the international community to refrain from any action that might affect regional stability and security,” according to the Russian agency Sputnik.

“Turkey’s intention to launch new oil and gas exploration activities in the whole region unfortunately goes the opposite way,” Josep Borrell said.

The European Union has adopted a mechanism to sanction individuals or entities responsible for, or involved in, unauthorized drilling activities of hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The sanctions would involve travel bans and assets’ freeze on people and entities like companies or organizations. EU citizens and businesses would be forbidden from providing them with funds.2
