Taher El-Sonni: “Turkey Was the Only Country that Responded to GNA’s Call, the International Community Did Nothing” – Al Marsad

The Tripoli-based Government of National Accord’s Libyan Ambassador to the United Nations, Taher El Sonni, commented on the latest Turkish movements in Libya, describing Turkey as “the only country that responded to the calls made by the Government of the National Accord (GNA) while the international community did nothing for more than ten months of fighting in Tripoli.”

[Libya, 23 February 2020] – The statements by Sonni, the controversial former Senior Advisor for Political Affairs of the GNA’s Head Fayez al-Sarraj, came after rare a acknowledgement made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which he confessed that Ankara had sent Syrian mercenaries to fight in Libya and that a number of Turkish military men were killed along with Syrian militants. Erdogan called those who were killed in Libya as “martyrs.”

Erdogan alleged that his forces succeeded in killing  hundreds of soldiers of the Libyan National Army as retaliation for the “murder” of his soldiers in Libya.
