El-Sonni: We Launched Operation “Peace Storm” to Fight Fire with Fire – Al Marsad

Libya’s Presidential Council’s permanent representative to the UN, Taher el-Sonni, justified GNA’s decision to launch Operation “Peace Storm” to hit the “sources of violation”, meaning the Libyan Armed Forces in the Uqba ibn Nafi airbase, as self-defense and protection of civilians.

[Libya, 26 March 2020] – Taher El-Sonni tweeted on his official Twitter account on Wednesday, saying, “Despite requests for a humanitarian ceasefire, terrorist groups continue their organised terrorist operations against civilians.”

The controversial former Senior Advisor for Political Affairs for the GNA’s Fayez al-Sarraj says that these terrorist activities have been met with complete international silence as usual, and said that the counter operation was launched as self-defense and in an attempt to protect civilians, and that “we can only fight fire with fire”.

However, Operation “Peace Storm” was a complete failure for the Government of National Accord (GNA). The GNA militants failed to gain Al-Watiyah, and it was swiftly retaken by the Libyan National Army (LNA). According Major General Abdullah Nur A-Din Al-Hamali, commander of Al-Zawiyah Military Zone of the Libyan National Army (LNA), said the LNA forces defeated the mercenary militias and chased them up to near the Tunisian borders, controlling all the camps and concentrations of the terrorist militias in this area up to Ragdelin and Al-Assah.
