Andrea Cozzolino, Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Maghreb Countries (DMAG), condemned the recent escalation of violence in Libya. He welcomed the launch of the European Operation Irini to monitor the UN-imposed arms embargo in Libya.

[Libya, 29 March 2020] – In a statement to the Italian Nova newspaper on Sunday, Andrea Cozzolino said: “As the world needs to unite against the novel coronavirus pandemic, every citizen everywhere in the world must heed the UN call to stop the hostilities.”

Cozzolino called on all warring parties in Libya to stop their offensives immediately and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. He reiterated that there can be no military solution to the Libyan crisis and that the only resolution should be through a comprehensive political process brokered by the UN.

Cozzolino also welcomed the European Council’s decision to launch the military Operation Irini to monitor the implementation of the UN-imposed arms embargo, calling on the EU institutions and its member states to redouble efforts to ensure the expeditious deployment of Operation Irene.
