EU launches Naval Operation Irini to Enforce Arms Embargo on Libya – Al Marsad

The European Union announced on Monday the launch of Operation Irini, a new military operation in the Mediterranean to monitor the enforcement of the resolution on arms embargo on Libya.

[Libya, 31 March 2020] – Charles Michel, President of the European Council, made it clear that the Operation Irene would use warships and satellites to carry out its mission, adding that it would also fight oil smuggling and human trafficking.

Michel affirmed that launching Operation Irene would be a step towards reaching a political solution in Libya, indicating that the EU is committed to supporting the mediation efforts undertaken by the United Nations to put the needs of the Libyan people in the first place.
