Jonathan Winer: Acts of Retribution by GNA Forces Will Further Damage Libya – Al Marsad

Former US special envoy to Libya, Jonathan Winer, called on the Government of National Accord (GNA) to take all possible steps to prevent atrocities from being committed by any force or individual, stressing the need to enforce human rights laws.

[Libya, 16 April 2020] – Jonathan Winer in a tweet on his official account today, Thursday, said: “Cycles of revenge will further damage Libya. Critical for GNA to take all possible steps to prevent atrocities by any affiliated force or person & if they occur to enforce human rights laws.”

 

The GNA militias retook Surman and Sabratha during the weekend, yet it was marked by criminal acts of violence committed by GNA fighters including assassinations, arrests, looting, arson, the burning of police stations, and the release of over 600 hardcore prisoners from jails in both cities. The prisoners released by GNA-aligned gangs included dozens accused of human trafficking, fuel smuggling, affiliation to Al-Qaeda, ISIS and Shura terrorist organizations, premeditated murder, armed robbery, and other crimes that had shocked the cities and regions of the West Coast.

The prison break was shock news to Libyans and the international community. Wolfram Lacher, the German researcher and specialist on Libyan affairs who is a Senior Associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) said it was a “catastrophe”.

The attack on Surman and Sabratha also revealed the presence in the attacks of UN-sanctioned criminals such the human trafficker Abdul Rahman Milad (Al-Bija) and the oil smuggler Mohammed Kachlaf (Al-Qasab), along with the terrorist Faraj Shakku, who a member of the Benghazi Revolutionaries Shura Council (BRSC) who had given his allegiance also to ISIS, and smuggling ringleaders such as Ahmed Al-Dabbashi (Al-Ammo). Photos from Sabratha, taken after the burning of the police station, showed a militia vehicle with the portrait of the terrorist Wissam bin Hamid.

In a further worrying development today, which revealed the extent of extremist backing of the “UN-recognised” Government of National Accord (GNA), the Islamist cleric Sadiq al-Gharyani said on his TV channel Al-Tanasuh that it was permissible for GNA fighters to conduct suicide terrorists against its enemies.
