EU Monitoring Turkey’s Illegal Actions in the Eastern Mediterranean – Al Marsad

Peter Stano, the spokesman for the High Representative of the Union for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, confirmed that the EU institutions and Member States are closely monitoring Turkey’s actions in the eastern Mediterranean.

[Libya, 18 April 2020] – Peter Stano, in a statement yesterday, quoted by the Italian agency Aki, commented on Turkey’s resumption of drilling and exploration operations in the eastern Mediterranean, specifically in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus, stressing: “Our position has not changed. We still believe that these actions are illegal and a source of concern to us.”

Stano expressed the EU’s full solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus, its Member State, to preserve its sovereignty and legitimate rights.

As for what the EU will do, Stano confirmed that the illegal Turkish actions were the focus of many discussions at various levels, recalling that last November the EU set a legal framework for restrictive measures against Turkey followed in February by imposing sanctions on some of those involved in exploration.

If Turkey continues its illegal actions, we will respond and act within the framework already set, concluded Peter Stano.
