Audit Bureau’s Second-in-Charge Kidnapped by Fathi Bashagha’s Armed Men – Al Marsad

The Audit Bureau in Tripoli announced the news that Mr. Redha Qurqab, Director of the General Department of Financial Supervision for the Public Sector, has been kidnapped. Redha Qurqab is the second in charge after the Bureau’s President and his Deputy.

[Libya, 4 May 2020} – In a statement posted on its official webpage, the Audit Bureau indicated as follows: “This morning, Monday 04/05/2020, a member of the Bureau, Redha Qurqab, Director of the General Department of Financial Supervision of the Public Sector, was the victim of kidnapping and enforced disappearance.”

The kidnapped Redha Qurqab

In a major surprise, the Audit Bureau revealed that an armed group from the office of Fathi Bashagha, the Interior Minister, kidnapped Redha Qurqab in front of his house in Janzur area, west of the capital, Tripoli.

The statement indicated that the kidnapping took place to prevent Qurqab and discourage him from auditing some of the Ministry’s transactions and bank accounts, in flagrant violation of Article (38) of the Law (No. 19/2013), which grants him legal immunity.

The Audit Bureau expressed its condemnation in the strongest terms of the kidnapping and forced detention, regretting that the entity entrusted by the community to enforce and protect the law, i.e. Ministry of Interior, was the one that violated it.

The Audit Bureau concluded by stressing that this act is a crime punishable by law, calling for the speedy and unconditional release of Redha Qurqab. Commentators on the Bureau’s statement considered that Bashagha’s act is integral to his new-old militia mindset though, ironically enough, he always claimed to be fighting the militias over financial allocations and embezzlement.

There has been no official comment yet from Interior Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bashagha, or his ministry.
