Former Italian Defence Chief says IRINI Cut Off Military Supplies to the GNA – Al Marsad

The former Chief of the Defence General Staff in Italy and the scientific adviser to the Institute of International Affairs (IAI), General Vincenzo Camporini, said his country’s position in Libya is now nil.

(Libya, 22 May 2020) – General Vincenzo Camporin, in an interview with the newspaper Il Riformista on Thursday, according to the Italian agency Aki, said: “As a football metaphor, in the game taking place in Libya, Italy is sitting on the bench after it received a yellow card.”

Camporini, who also served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force, continued: “We are applying flawless official policies in terms of international law, but they are favouring a party involved in the conflict and this party is not the President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj.”

The military expert alluded to the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, saying: “We prefer him in practice because we were among the promoters of the new EU Operation IRINI, which we have demanded to lead vigorously, a mission aimed at enforcing the UN resolution on the arms embargo imposed on the parties to the Libyan conflict.”

Camporini concluded that: “Unfortunately, though Haftar can receive significant land supplies, IRINI cut off any supplies to the GNA, which effectively weakened the legitimate government.”
