Norland tells Sarraj the Destabilizing Flow of Materiel and Mercenaries Must Stop, Fails to Mention Turkey – Al Marsad

The US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland spoke to the President of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, on Friday to confirm the urgent need to end the destabilizing flow of military equipment and mercenaries into Libya, claiming that Russia and other countries he did not name, send weapons and mercenaries. Norland made no reference to the weapons that Turkey continues to send or the ten thousand mercenaries it has recruited to fight In Libya or the threat it will pose to the security of the Mediterranean given the terrorist links of many of the militants.

(Libya, 23 May 2020) – The US Embassy indicated, according to its media office, that the conversation discussed, as was with the case with the call by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Fayez al-Sarraj earlier, the need for the so-called “unnecessary attack against Tripoli” to end so that all “foreign forces” (without specifying those behind them) leave. Then, the Libyan leaders ready to put down their weapons can meet in a peaceful dialogue to review the issues of contention. Norland welcomed the important contributions of the Government of National Accord (GNA) to defeat terrorism and achieve peace, as he put it.

Norland told Sarraj that he intends to travel to Libya as soon as conditions allow to submit his credentials formally and deepen the partnership between the United States and Libya further.

The US Ambassador also conveyed to the President of the Presidential Council and the Libyan people sincere congratulations on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr.
