US State Department Issues a Completely Different Statement from Sarraj on Pompeo’s Call – Al Marsad

The President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, received a phone call today, Friday, from the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to discuss developments in Libya.

(Libya, 22 May 2020) – The US Department of State indicated in a statement that Secretary Pompeo called Fayez Sarraj to “reiterate US opposition to the continued level of weapons and munitions being brought into the country. Secretary Pompeo and Prime Minister Sarraj emphasized the importance of an immediate halt to the fighting and return to political dialogue.”

This statement contradicts the one published by Fayez al-Sarraj’s Media Office, which did not mention the objection of the US Secretary of State to the flow of weapons to Libya.

According to the GNA’s statement, Pompeo is said to have expressed that the US is keen to achieve stability in Libya and end the suffering of its people. It also said the call touched on the strategic partnership between the United States and Libya to combat terrorism and the efforts exerted in this regard.

According to the statement, Sarraj expressed appreciation for the US position in support of efforts to achieve security and stability in Libya, saying: “The GNA is fighting a war imposed on it and it is repelling an attack that has displaced and killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed infrastructure and residential areas.”
