Ghannouchi Describes His Bias Towards the GNA as “Positive” – Al Marsad

The Speaker of the Tunisian Parliament and head of Islamist Ennahdha Movement, Rachid Ghannouchi, defended his bias in the Libyan crisis in favouring the Turkish-backed government of Fayez al-Sarraj.

(Libya, 4 June 2020) – Rachid Ghannouchi, during the opening of the regular session of the Tunisian parliament on Tuesday, described his bias to Sarraj’s government as “positive”, saying: “In light of what is going on in Libya, its neighbours cannot live in carelessness. If there is a fire at your neighbour’s, you cannot be neutral; extinguishing the fire is a duty and necessity.”

“Therefore, passive neutrality makes no sense. We call for positive neutrality by pushing all rivals to a political and peaceful solution,” added Ghannouchi.

Ghannouchi said Tunisia and its president are in contact with Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), accusing those who oppose his communication with the GNA as looking for a substitute for legitimacy, as he put it.
