Sarraj Announces Immediate Ceasefire, Calls for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections – Al Marsad

The head of the Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, instructed all his military forces to cease fire and all combat operations immediately in all Libyan territories.

(Libya, 21 August 2020) – In a statement, Fayez al-Sarraj said that he issued these instructions based on his political and national responsibility and the current situation imposed by the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country and the entire region.

He added that achieving an actual ceasefire requires the demilitarization of Sirte and Jufra while the police forces from both sides agree on security arrangements within them. “With this announcement of a ceasefire, the President of the Presidential Council affirms that the ultimate goal is to restore full sovereignty over Libyan soil and ensure the exit of foreign forces and mercenaries,” continued the statement.

Sarraj stressed that the capabilities of the Libyan people cannot be compromised, calling for the resumption of production and exports in the oil fields and ports while depositing the revenues in a special account of the National Oil Corporation (NOC) at the Libyan Foreign Bank (LFB) and not disbursing them until after reaching comprehensive political arrangements in line with the outcomes of the Berlin Conference and in a manner that guarantees transparency and governance with the help of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the international community.

He also announced he had taken all measures to support the efficient and optimal management of national resources, reaffirming that the NOC is the only entity entitled to oversee the security of oil fields and ports throughout Libya.

Sarraj concluded by confirming his call for presidential and parliamentary elections during next March as per a constitutional rule agreed upon by all Libyans.
