Bashagha Demands the Presidential Council for a Public and Live Interrogation Session – Al Marsad

The suspended Minister of Interior of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bashagha, announced his readiness for an investigation to reveal the facts as they are without courtesy or equivocation before the GNA’s Presidential Council. He lands in Tripoli as Sarraj appoints a new Minister of Defence.

(Libya, 29 August 2020) – In a statement yesterday, Friday, Bashagha affirmed his readiness to inform the Presidential Council of what is sufficient to dispel any doubt through certain evidence and proofs based on his adherence to the principles of democracy and a civil state that guarantees its people the constitutional rights of expression and peaceful protest, as claimed.

However, Bashagha, who hails from Misrata, demanded the Presidential Council for accountability and investigation session to be public and broadcast live on the media outlets to highlight the facts before the Libyan people, the source of legitimacy, based on his belief in transparency and the principles of democracy, as he put it.

Statement by Fathi Bashagha.

“This relies on our firm belief in the state of law and institutions in which there is no one above accountability, and which observes administrative hierarchy. This is the case because the subject of investigations is the position and statements of the Ministry of Interior on peaceful demonstrations and my objection to the security measures issued by armed parties not affiliated with the Ministry, and the resulting abuse of the dignity of the Libyan citizens, violation of their rights, spilling their blood, let alone suppression, intimidation, and silencing of mouths where there is no law.”

He pointed out that his position was biased towards the Libyan people in demanding their just rights by peaceful means, which is the focus of the suspension decision and the subject of investigations, reiterating his assertion that he will implement the decision once issued in compliance with and respect for the law.

Bashagha arrived in Tripoli this afternoon from Ankara surrounded by militiamen in a show of force against the forces loyal to Fayez al-Sarraj.

Fayez al-Sarraj announced today that he had appointed Salah al-Din al-Namroush as GNA’s Defense Minister and Mohamed al-Haddad as Chief of Staff.
