Maitiq: I Will Focus on Economic Recovery if Libyans Choose Me to Lead Government – Al Marsad

Member of the Presidential Council for the city of Misrata, Ahmed Maitiq, said he would be happy to serve as head of the next Government of National Accord (GNA) if Libyans chose him.

(Libya, 28 November 2020) – Ahmed Maitiq, in response to a question during an interview with the Italian Corriere della Sera newspaper on whether he confirms his candidacy to lead the new government, he replied: “I will be happy to serve the Libyan people if they choose me.”

He added, “If this happens, I will commit, first and foremost, to achieve economic recovery and work with the Central Bank to resolve liquidity crisis and the equitable distribution of energy revenues.”

Regarding accusations of treason following negotiations with the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, which resulted in the resumption of oil production, and whether he considered the latter a partner in dialogue, Maitiq responded: “I say it frankly that isolation is useless, it only creates opportunities for war; if part of Libyans consider Haftar as their representative it is legitimate to include him in the political process.” He also added, “I took a risk for the good and peace of our country, as for who will lead the country that will be determined by the ballot box.”

Maitiq believes that Italy could play the role of a mediator in a multilateral dialogue between Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Libya over energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean.

In response to a question about the recent decline of Rome’s role in Libya, Maitiq said: “I think that the Italian role has always been pivotal, let’s not forget its help in the war against ISIS in Sirte in 2016, the establishment of a military field hospital in Misrata and medical cooperation in the fight against Covid-19. ” He noted that the Italian Embassy in Tripoli never closed even during the most difficult times.
