Ali El-Sohl: Kabir-Bashagha Rift a Symptom of Conflict Between GNA and CBL – Al Marsad

Expert on Libyan economy Ali El-Solh said that the conflict between the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), Siddik al-Kabir, and the Interior Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bashagha, was a complete reflection of the tensions between the GNA and the Central Bank.

(Libya, 12 December 2020) — As tensions continue to brew between the CBL and the GNA, veteran economist Ali El-Solh has called for measures to unify state institutions and strengthen coordination among them.

In a statement to the Qatari “Arabi 21” website, El-Solh said that the Interior Minister’s decision to rely on Parliament to prevent officials from travelling was expected.

However, he stressed that as a competent authority, the Attorney General is determined to press ahead with his decision on the travel ban for Siddik al-Kabir. Further political bickering and a legal battle between the two parties are expected, he added.

Regarding the economic impact of the crisis, El-Solh said: “We saw the rise of foreign currencies against the Libyan dinar after it witnessed a decline during the past days, and this is an unhealthy indicator of the Libyan economy and contributes to inflaming conflicts.”
