Turkey Boasts Its Regional Clout After US Sanctions – Al Marsad

The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said that it is impossible to take any action in Libya without Turkey, according to state-owned Anadolu news agency.

(Libya, 16 December 2020) – Mevlut Cavusoglu said he rejected US sanctions imposed on Turkey over its decision to purchase Russian-made S400 missile defence system, claiming that Ankara’s “active foreign policy” has made it unfeasible for other nations to take actions in the regional arena without his country’s consent.

“Our active foreign policy has made it impossible to take action in files such as Syria, Libya, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Caucasus, Afghanistan and Iraq without Turkey,” he said.

The Turkish foreign minister claimed that his country was engaged in dialogue with all parties in regional conflicts, referring to conflicts in Syria, Libya, Azerbaijan and other hotspots in which Ankara is accused of interfering.

The US has imposed a number of sanctions against the Turkish Defence Industries Corporation and its head, Ismail Demir, and a number of individuals over Turkey’s procurement of the Russian S400 missile defence system, which Washington deemed a threat to its security, calling on Ankara to withdraw from the deal before further punitive measures are imposed.
