Lavrov Says US is Playing “Political Games” with Allegations of Russian Meddling in the Mediterranean – Al Marsad

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the statement made last week by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Russia was stirring conflicts in the Mediterranean region were baseless and lacked evidence.

(Libya, 21 December 2020) — Countering US accusations that Russia is threatening instability in the Mediterranean region as being ill-founded, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that US regional policy is “not guided by facts” and that Washington is “playing political games” in the region, according news agency Sputnik.

Speaking recently during a press conference in Moscow with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, Lavrov said: “Over the years of working with the current administration, over the past four years, we have become accustomed to the fact that the Americans do not want, or do not know how, to discuss concerns on the basis of the facts that are direct and on the negotiation table.”

Commenting on the accusations of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, that Russia continues to threaten stability in the Mediterranean region by spreading misinformation, undermining sovereignty and stirring conflicts and division, Lavrov said: “Western countries have similar methods to the United States: Public accusations without presenting any facts.” The Russian foreign minister rejected the accusations as baseless.

“Mike Pompeo also indicated in his statement that Russia and a number of other countries are violating the embargo imposed on arms supplies to Libya under the UN Security Council resolution, and this topic is being talked about frequently and no one has provided any facts,” Lavrov said.
