Asharq Al-Awsat: US Efforts to De-Escalate Rising Libya Tensions – Al Marsad

A report prepared by Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper pointed to heated rhetoric between warring Libya sides and US-led efforts to calm tensions.

(Libya, 27 December 2020) — The Asharq Al-Awsat report described the speeches of the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and his counterpart, the head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj on the occasion of the 69th Independence Day as a war of words that could threaten the truce agreement between the two sides.

The report quoted informed sources confirming extensive regional and international contacts during the past hours with Field Marshal Haftar and al-Sarraj to salvage the fragile truce and prevent escalation between the warring sides.

The pan-Arab daily’s report also pointed to concerted international efforts, mainly from Washington, to pacify tensions and convene a crucial meeting of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission.

Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, in his Independence Day address, stressed the importance of “confronting the Turkish occupier”, while al-Sarraj used the occasion to implore the parties to the conflict to review their positions and use the “rare opportunity” for peace overtures.
