Ambassadors of Germany, Italy, US, France and Italy Meet with Sarraj to Stress Support for the LPDF – Al Marsad

The ambassadors of Germany, Italy and the United States and the acting ambassadors of the French and British embassies held a remote meeting with the head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj to reiterate support for the UN-led political dialogue.

(Libya, 1 January 2020) –The meeting held on Wednesday with the participation of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued a statement explaining the confirmation of foreign diplomats and representatives of the mission their full support for the success of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) and the associated economic and security dialogues facilitated by the United Nations.

The statement welcomed the recent prisoner exchanges, urging rapid progress to facilitate the reopening of the coastal road between Misrata and Sirte, as agreed by the 5+5 Joint Military Committee last October, stressing the need for a strong and joint Libyan leadership ahead of the scheduled elections on 24 December 2021.

It also urged the need for public statements to be constructive and supportive of the political process aimed at forming the executive authority, noting that the international actors are closely monitoring the actions taken by all parties to fulfil their obligations to succeed the United Nations-facilitated dialogues.

The statement pointed out that the GNA as the “internationally recognized government” has a special role to play in fully supporting this process and reaffirmed the call for the international community to provide full support to the Libya-led political process facilitated by the United Nations, including the LPDF and the ceasefire agreement.
