Nordic Monitor: Turkey Using Libya as Testing Ground for Its Weapons – Al Marsad

A report by the Swedish-based Nordic Monitor accused the regime of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of testing its weapons in foreign conflict zones such as Libya.

(Libya, 8 January 2021) – The report indicated that Turkey was testing its newly manufactured weapons on the people of Libya and on Libyan soil. It stated that Turkey was testing the effectiveness of new weaponry manufactured in Turkey at the expense of the Libya, Syrian, Iraqi and Armenian people, in various conflict zones where Turkey is currently involved.

It said, “Conflict zones have become platforms for Turkey to demonstrate its new assertiveness in its region and advertise Turkish weapons technology to the world’s arms market.”

Bayraktar TB 2 Drones

The report said Turkey was testing drones, tanks, combat helicopters and laser-guided missile systems. It added, “The field tests in real battles in 2020 helped Turkey improve its armed drones (unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs). Footage of Turkey’s Bayraktar TB-2 drones destroying several Russian-made Pantsir missile defense systems in Syria, Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh this year also increased their global visibility.”

Bayraktar TB2 Killer has cost the GNA almost US$5 million per drone, financed by the Central Bank of Libya.

In Libya, Turkey deployed a massive number of killer drones, many of which were destroyed by the Libyan National Army. According to former head of UNSMIL, Ghassan Salamé, the Libyan conflict was “the largest drone war in the world.”

Turkey has been continually deploying weapons to support militias under the GNA.

Although a ceasefire has been imposed in Libya through the 5+5 Joint Military Agreement signed in Geneva in October last year, Turkey has criticised the agreement and openly redoubled all supplies of weapons and mercenaries to the military bases it occupies in Government of National Accord controlled areas.

The agreement stipulated that all foreign forces need to leave Libya by 20 January, and it seems Turkey is determined to torpedo the agreement and undermine peace in Libya.
