Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva discussed with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, the political and international issues in the region and particularly the situation in Libya.

(Libya, 9 January 2021) – The Foreign Minister of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva, stressed in a press conference with the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in the capital, Lisbon, on Thursday according to what was reported by the Turkish Anadolu Agency. The media report said that the Santos stressed  the importance of setting a positive cooperation agenda between Turkey and the European Union (EU), pointing out that Portugal good relations with Turkey politically, diplomatically and economically.

He stated that they discussed how to develop Ankara’s relations with the EU, noting that there were differences between Turkey and two EU member states, referring to France and Greece. He expressed hope that differences could be overcome through direct dialogue.

On developments in Libya, the Portuguese Foreign Minister stated that his country supported the ceasefire agreement, the political process and the Berlin Conference.

He said he was pleased positive steps were being taken regarding the eastern Mediterranean and its stability, saying: “We hope that a positive cooperation agenda will emerge during the next EU summit, and that we can establish peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean.”
