Report Reveals Agreement Between Morsi and Al-Zawahiri to Support Islamist Groups in Libya – Al Marsad

Information obtained by Al-Arabiya revealed that there was complete coordination between the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaeda in Libya after the Brotherhood came to power in Egypt in 2012. Egyptian security services monitored a strange call to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, from the phone of Ambassador Muhammad Rif’at al-Tahtawi, President of the Office of the Presidency in Egypt during period when Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi was in power.

(Libya, 10 January 2021) – The report noted that during the call, Ambassador Al-Tahtawi checked on the health of Al-Zawahiri because they were my cousins, and then he informed him that President Mohamed Morsi wanted to talk to him.

The report indicated that during the call it was agreed to fully coordinate in Libya to help the Brotherhood-affiliated groups control the state of affairs on the ground. Al-Zawahiri asked Morsi to send an Egyptian Brotherhood delegation to Libya to coordinate with Nazih Abdul-Hamed Al-Ruqai, also known as Abu Anas Al-Libi—a Libyan IT engineer who worked as a computer and communications specialist for Al-Qaeda and was a key leader of the organization in Libya.

The report confirmed that Al-Zawahiri requested financial support for the fugitive leaders of the Islamic Jihad Group and their families, the release of some of them who were imprisoned through a presidential pardon issued by Morsi, and the intervention and pressure for the release of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the mufti of the Islamic Jihad Group, who was being held in the US.
