Il Foglio: Italy Sees Maitiq and Haftar as Potential Peacemakers in Libya – Al Marsad

The Italian newspaper “Il Foglio” said Italy seems to have revised its plans for Libya in light of the recent moves by the Italian intelligence. It claims Italy views Maitiq and Haftar as potential peacemakers.

(Libya, 28 January 2021) – According to the Italian Agenzia Nova, the revised plan was based first and foremost on identifying two personalities as potential peacemakers in Libya:, namely, the Deputy Head of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Ahmed Maitiq in the West, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, in the East.

The report saw the visit and meeting with Field Marshal Haftar in Benghazi on 19 January 2021, as well as on 17 December 2020, by the head of Italy’s Foreign Information and Security Agency, General Gennaro Vecchione, assigns of a renewed relationship between Italy and the LNA.
