December 24 Movement: LPDF’s Legal Committee Cannot Deny Libyans the Right to Elect Nation’s President – Al Marsad

The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum’s Legal Committee meets today in Tunisia to decide on the mechanism for the direct Presidential and Parliamentary elections that are scheduled for 24 December 2021. The Muslim Brotherhood block in the Legal Committee, continues to insist on adopting the Lebanese model for selecting a President via the new Parliament. The December 24 Movement issued a statement today on this issue, sounding the alarm that the Muslim Brotherhood’s option will deny the rights of the Libyan people.

(LIBYA, 8 April 2021) – The December 24 Movement issued an official statement today through their spokesperson Abdullah al-Gharyani. We reproduce the statement in full below.

As we support the work of the Legal Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum convened in Tunis to formulate the Constitutional Rule for holding direct Parliamentary and Presidential Elections;

We warn against the consequences of manipulating the inherent right of the people to directly elect a President who serves them and ends the farce of the legislative authority’s intervention in the executive work, and we affirm that this is a genuine right of the Libyan people.

We, in the December 24 Movement, cannot accept the confiscation of the people’s right and depriving them of electing their President.

The December 24 Movement, as a peaceful civil movement, will find itself obliged to go to the streets and squares to protest against this aberration, if it happens, God forbid.

The Movement will call for a general strike and civil disobedience so that the right to elect a President for the Libyans returns to the Libyan people, away from the agendas and shady deals.

God knows best the intention behind one’s deeds.
