Al-Mishri Attacks Al-Mangoush’s Statements on Turkish Forces and Mercenaries Leaving Libyan Soil – Al Marsad

Chairman of the High Council of Council, Khaled al-Mishri, who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Justice and Construction Party, protested against the statements made in Rome to Italian MPs by Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush on the necessity of the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Libya.

(LIBYA, 23 April 2021) – Khaled al-Mishri said in a statement published by the Media Office of the High Council of State that he respects the roadmap issued by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), one of whose outputs were the formation of the interim Government of National Unity (GNU).

He said it was outside the remit of the GNU to cancel previous agreements, or to amend them, according to what was stipulated in the 10th paragraph of Article VI of the LPDF roadmap. Mishri called these agreements “legitimate”, and no doubt referring primarily to the Sarraj-Erdogan security agreement, even though the agreement was never ratified by the elected parliament and was therefore deemed illegal.

In response to the statements made by the interim GNU’s Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush to Italian MPs in Rome today on the exit of the Turkish militants and their mercenaries from Libya, he said: “To the statements attributed to the Foreign Minister, which were transmitted through an Italian news agency, we affirm our respect for the agreement signed with the Turkish state in both parts, and we also respect any previous agreements in any domain signed with other countries.”

In direct reference to al-Mangoush’s statements at the hearing of the Italian Chamber of Deputies’ Foreign Affairs Committee at the Montecitorio Palace in Rome, he said, “Whoever discusses issues related to national security before a foreign parliament is not entitled to talk about national sovereignty.”

Al-Mashri added, “The presence of foreign forces on Libyan lands is totally and completely unacceptable, and it should not be the subject of discussion or bargaining by anyone, but everyone should be well aware of the difference between mercenaries and the presence of forces based on these concluded agreements.”

The Muslim Brotherhood leader said he hoped “the executive authority will pay attention to this and respect the entire roadmap and abide by it.”
