Al-Mangoush: We Must Unify State Institutions and Liberate Sovereign Decisions from Coercion – Al Marsad

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the interim Government of National Unity (GNU), Najla al-Mangoush, said the US needs to support the government to achieve the Roadmap goals.

(LIBYA, 18 May 2021) – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the interim Government of National Unity (GNU), Najla al-Mangoush, at a joint press conference today with US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs, Joey Hood, said there was an urgent need to coordinate international positions towards the Libyan crisis to ensure success of the Berlin Conference and the Roadmap.

Al-Mangoush urged the US to reopen its embassy and consulate in Tripoli and Benghazi, which would send a positive message to the international community. She stressed the need to end foreign interference, provide services to Libyan citizen, develop the work of state institutions, and launch comprehensive national reconciliation.

She said the GNU was looking forward to working closely with the US and its envoy in order to fulfil the Roadmap which emanated from the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF). She emphasized the importance of unifying state institutions and liberating national sovereign decision from any material or political coercion, internally or externally.

The Libyan Foreign Minister stressed the need for the executive authority to provide the necessary conditions for holding elections and strengthening political legitimacy in the country by addressing security issues, extending national sovereignty over the entire Libyan territory and ending the presence of foreign forces and mercenaries. “We are keen on implementing the Roadmap and we are looking forward to holding the elections on time,” said al-Mangoush.

On the Palestinian issue al-Mangoush said, “We renew our position in support of the Palestinian cause, and condemn the use of force against the Palestinians and uphold the sacredness of religious sanctities, and we abide by the Security Council resolution and international legitimacy in particular.”

The US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs, Joey Hood said at the press conference that the ” goal of the United States is a sovereign, stable, unified Libya with no foreign interference, and a state that is capable of combating terrorism.”
