UNSMIL Announces Virtual Meeting to Finalise Constitutional Basis for December Elections – Al Marsad

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSML) announce on Wednesday that it will be convening a two-day virtual meeting for the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) on 26–27 May to finalise the proposed constitutional basis for Parliamentary and Presidential elections to be held on 24 December 2021.

(LIBYA, 20 May 2021) – A press release issued by UNSMIL said the virtual meeting on 26–27 May would study the proposals of the Legal Committee of the LPDF, which were finalised during its meeting in Tunis on 7–9 April and subsequent consultations facilitated by UNSMIL.

The statement emphasized that the deliberations of the meeting will then be submitted to the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State for their consideration. UNSMIL stressed the 1 July deadline for agreement on the constitutional and electoral framework as required by the UN Security Council resolution 2570, to allow the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to proceed with preparations for the December elections.

The statement also said the virtual meeting will be streamed live “to allow the Libyan people the chance to follow up the LPDF deliberations”. UNSMIL also said that it “regrets recent attempts to misinform the public opinion and undermine the political process in Libya by circulating fake documents claiming to be the ‘Constitutional framework for the elections,’ on social media and encourages the Libyan public and interested parties to refer solely to documents issued by UNSMIL and available on its website and official social media platforms.”
